Is "feeling othered" something of a prerequisite for radical change, though? Like how the struggle(TM) united by alienation is part of abolishing alienation?

I don't think it is. But it is a prerequisite for most identities. And especially so those identities that are based on some sort of collective oppression or trauma. If I had a nickel for everytime I heard, "What are you doing for Black Struggle?" or "How can you help The Movement for our community?" These days, my reply is something like, "I don't know you, bruh."

These sorts of narratives have a lot of power which is why they're so sticky over time.
