Do you think it says anything about the basics that leftists are unwilling to read them?

I don't understand your question, sorry.

My fault, I'm never as clear as I'd like to be.

You say it's a problem that leftists are unwilling to read the basics.

But (if anything) what does that say about the quality of the basics, if leftists are unwilling to read the basics?

I don't think the fundamental books in anarchism or communism has anything wrong with their quality, however those are books that demand your attention and have a bit dated form of expression.

The biggest jab is against those that repeat memes like 'Read the bread book' when never reading it themselves, or only knowing select quotations to justify their often misguided views.

Yea, they're really good books, but aren't suited for modern movements just because they can't spread as well as they used to. They're just for political nerds and academics at this point. If we want to recommend "the basics," we should find more modern basics, IMO. (And recommend the actual basics to the more curious readers)

Now more than ever those book are showing their importance, now that capitalism has spread to all corners of world, that its promises about the future has not and will not be fulfilled, now we must read those book and make sure that the next revolution be the last.

And frankly, many modern authors lack the discipline that Marx and other had, specially when they try to cite him or explain him. So it's best to read his works directly than trust the marxist.
