Have there been any states with actual direct democracy? It seems like it doesn't exist and direct democracy is just as much a fantasy as anarchy or communism.

Anything can be subverted. Direct democracy on a very small scale is fine, like a village gathering. But for any kind of nation-state, even one the size of Luxembourg, it's effectively as easy to corrupt as a Republic.
