A Critique of "Tankies and the Left-Unity Scam" | anarchistnews.org anarchistnews.org

Submitted by ziq in Anarchism (edited )

I kinda agree that communism is a recipe for oppression (because of how many shitty ways there are to attempt to implement it and because Marx and Engels refused to take a stance against authority), but I wrote the article for a general anarchist audience, and most anarchists see communism and anarchism as being inseparable.

It's interesting to me that the critique comes down to "it doesn't go far enough because all communism is bad".

Compare that to r/chapo's critique which is basically "anarchists aren't smart enough to understand Lenin's game of 3D chess lol":

think I'd push back a little against "and most anarchists see communism and anarchism as being inseparable." Is that really the case?

So far as I understand, most anarchists are anarcho-communists, so I assume this is just what is meant here.

Where I'm from there's a clear distinction between anarchists and communists because after our people gained independence, communists and anarchists took 2 wildly opposing views of how to decolonize.

The communists cozied up to Stalinists around the world, amassed power here with their union, secured cushy gov jobs with incredible salaries and pensions for all their friends (while those stuck working in the private sector have to pay their salaries even though we get paid a fraction of what they get paid), became the largest political party, eventually taking the presidency... which ended in unmitigated disaster, a series of huge blows to the working class, a giant wealth transfer from native workers to the neo-colonial capitalist class, and cemented "communism's" complete and utter failure for all to see. Since then they've been licking their wounds and preparing to challenge the conservative party for another round of red capitalism Vs. blue capitalism.

Meanwhile, after incurring heavy losses fighting all the invading colonists as well as the local fascists / nationalists for generations, and in the face of the communists and the capitalists uniting to create a post-colonial state, the anarchists just died out.

USAmerican settlers have never really had experience with anything other than capitalism, yeah. So you really wouldn't know communism.

Wouldn't they also be settlers technically?

When you say anarchism and communism do you mean the supposed end goal of communism?

I think communism has been thoroughly tainted by power-hungry authoritarians and Marx largely enabled it with his state-friendly theories and Western-civilization-chauvinism.

Authoritarian communists have long vastly outnumber libertarian communists so I don't see the point of trying to convince ourselves that a word that is for all intents and purposes owned and controlled by authoritarians can be reclaimed by libertarians.

I'm going to stop talking about communism as the stateless, moneyless, anarchistic end goal because there's just no way anyone is going to buy into that at this point. Communism is dead.
