A while back I was at a rally where I had a confrontation with someone in a libertarian party tshirt who yelled something insulting about communism at a person with a hammer and sickle flag. I confronted the libertarian about it, hoping to correct his conflation of communism with the USSR's totalitarian dictatorship, and as soon as I brought up the events that happened between 1905 and 1907, I was shocked that he responded with a detailed account of the Bolshevik revolution and the events preceding it. This made it easy for me to introduce an anarchist perspective to these events, and explain how the rapid decline of the Soviet Union was a matter of a totalitarian state rather than anything to do with communism. I could tell he was open to my interpretation. "By the way," I said, "I notice that you're wearing a libertarian party shirt. I'm quite interested in Libertarianism, but I can't stand party politics." I went on to explain that the party is pro big business, supports states' "right" to deny people certain things and control their lives and isn't actually interested in liberty on any tangible level. "Whereas libertarians want to somewhat minimize the power of the government, I want to dismantle all power structures. I think that the multinational corporations that libertarian politicians support can be even more destructive to our liberty than the federal government." Again, he reluctantly nodded in agreement, "Yeah... It's just another way they control us..." We continued to discuss how the criticism of the federal government should be extended much further, from the workplace and schools and religious institutions to city councils to the banks. Finally he asked where he could learn more about the things I was telling him. I can't explain how thrilled I was to hand this cynical Joe-Sixpack libertarian party member a well-worn copy of the Bread Book!

You can make it into one if you like, but it's not funny so I don't know why you'd want to.
