I have nothing better to do with my Monday night, so I've been refreshing this comment feed like Propagandhi tickets are about to drop to watch this Kant-worshiping "debate me bro!" type get smoked in real time...

Same applies to the other user claiming plants aren't sentient. How do they know? "Sentience" is as arbitrary a distinction as "intelligence". Fuck the Kantian, but they do have a point there.
Many plants rely upon being eaten or destroyed as part of their lifecycle, and will just wither and die if it doesn't occur.
I don't think a being with consciousness would mind being eaten if it's a required part of growth or reproduction.

that user is a notorious anti-vegan who literally spends all of their time on vegan and anarchist subs taking literally any stance against veganism that they can think of, even if it is literal absurdity. if you want some fun, take a deep dive into their post history. they will say anything as long as it is the opposite of what a vegan thinks.
they're really pushing hard against the aop in meta with some very silly arguments that have nothing to do with mine.

Fair and understandable - that said, we could use as many voices to drown out people like that as possible.

Kant is so fucking funny with his imperatives that one MUST do, like lying. One MUST NEVER lie, expect when you lie a little bit, you know like if you're gonna die if you tell the truth, or if you don't want to hurt someone's feelings, then it's ok.
It's no fun reading him trying to make that argument though, on account of all the 18th century ethics- and logic-babble. Honestly think Kant may be an even less engaging writer than Hegel. No wonder he's such a beloved influence for analytic philosophy.
i had to read a lot of people explaining wtf kant was talking about to be able to understand wtf he was talking about.
I was halfway through when I realized it was talking about the animal and not law enforcement.
I'm no vegan, but I don't think we should treat pigs as livestock. (Hunting wild boar is a different story.)
They are very smart, sensitive creatures, and they suffer from being treated like that.
