I haven’t seen any books written specifically about this topic. It’s just an idea I’ve been developing in my mind. By looking at stuff by actual hippies, and the fake watered down products, you see a difference which is impossible to ignore.

Do you mind if I give a small run down, so you can have an idea what and where to research?

I think the hippie exploitation began with a band called The Mamas and The Papas. They had made a few popular singles, and they looked relatively hippie-ish at the time. Now the business people saw all the money they were raking in, and came up with an idea. “These hippie-looking people are selling records. Maybe if we make stuff about hippies, the public will buy our stuff!” This seems to be the origin of focusing on hippies, although there was a predecessor with the beatnik image.

Well, the existence of hippie exploitation films and books, was in my opinion when the trend really took hold. These films as you can see by their trailers, were made mainly for monetary purposes, by featuring popular bands of the time, like The Seeds, The Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc.

The books were also trashy. I’ll show you some images at the bottom.

There was even a song called “California Hippy Murders,” which would be campy, if it wasn’t about the murder of Sharon Tate.

That should give you an idea of where to look and you could begin research. I apologize for showboating, and writing all of this. I’m just hoping to give you a starting point. I don’t know as much about the seventies, so you’re on your own there.
