I remember reading an article about how Nazarbayev had built a terrifying surveillance apparatus and wove some laws in order to be able to mantain control of the country while apparently stepping down. We'll see how these fictions hold against more basic forces.

Useful idiots. Puppets of US imperialism including via NED/CIA. Just like the Kiev US backed Nazi coup. If they want credibility they have to reject Western and US interference and money. Until they do, they're as independent as bribe taking politicians. The lying far right capitalist media of the West says this is about gas prices. Wrong. They're not protesting capitalism, and the cost of living is through the roof around the world.
