In regards to lexicon on a larger and sometimes cultural level, "bastard" is synonymous with "asshole" much more often than "a fatherless child." Also "asshole" more often than not is attributed to someone being a jerk in lieu of being attributed to someone's actual anus. Where does this leave us? I think intent is important and we must consider the larger adoption of words and their associative meanings more so than their meanings of the past.
