I think this is yet another solid argument for requiring all software on everything to be open source / free-as-in-freedom. That's not inherently incompatible with capitalism. It is inherently incompatible with the extraction of profits through an artificial monopoly from proprietary software, and of course that business model is wildly popular with anyone benefiting from it.
