African American slavery was absolutely terrible, but I think we're forgetting the slavery that most of the bourgeoisie subject us to is also a form of slavery itself- the Irish were not slaves in the sense that the Africans were, but they and all others forced to work and die for their 'masters' were slaves in their own sense.
