I tend to be sympathetic. I think many join for legitimate reasons and don't realize they're just tools until it's too late (look at the high suicide rate for vets). Of course, some enjoy killing and those monsters deserve nothing but contempt.

I think the horrors of war become more unbearable when you know you aren't fighting for the good guys.

But you may be correct. Just speaking from the few vets I have known.

I think this is also why so many vets become so patriotic. It's a way to cope. After you've seen so much bloodshed and senseless death you just have to cling to whatever holds your sanity. I can't blame them for this, it would take an amazingly strong person to recover from this stuff, and I know I wouldn't be able to.
