To (try to) put it simply, it's like Twitter but instead of being a centralised platform controlled by a private company, it's a set of open protocols and free software that allows anyone (with some tech skills and a server) to run a node of the network. Every node handles their own moderation, including choosing what other nodes they don't want to federate with. As a user, you can make posts, and follow and message people on any node (your main timeline is composed of the latest posts of users you follow across the whole network, sans algorithm).
