We can be free if we want to

We can leave your friends behind

'Cause your friends aren't free and if they aren't free

Well they're no friends of mine

Discord. I had my own mumble server before but everyone I know moved over to discord. I'm not happy about it, but it's pretty low on the list of things I'm not happy about.

What aspects of Mumble do you prefer over Discord? I dislike how centralised Discord is but I enjoy having decent text chat.

Signal and I guess if you consider shitposting then discord

I feel those two - I've been trying to get my friends to move to Keybase and Matrix but no dice :(

Whats the point of keybase besides sharing gpg keys?

Keybase also released a chat application a few months back :)

It allows for account creation without being attached to a mobile number and also allows linking with different internet accounts for identity confirmation. Plus apparently you can leave messages for people before they join the service properly (I haven't tested this yet).

I don't think using a popular proprietary messaging service means one doesn't care about software freedom... seems like a pretty dogmatic stance to take tbh.

kik. but that's for hookups, not my friends. all my friends are on irc, xmpp or sms. last one counts as proprietary I suppose

Facebook :( I tried to set up Mastodon for some mates, but uptake was slow because they were used to more features than microblogging services provide.

I was using Snapchat until they introduced the creepy tracking stuff.

text messaging and snapchat. I only use snapchat because I found out I don't have to give it my name or location.

Slack because of work. I'd rather we used something like Mattermost or something similar.

Slack and Discord. Slack is open source, however still corporate owned. I only used these two proprietary software because they can be used on web browsers like Tor Browser. I'm freed about 90% by using FOSS. Anything except the laptop hardware, is FOSS.

at least go into facebook settings and find where you can encrypt the emails they sent you with your pgp public key, if you didn't already know of that feature.
