Quote from their readme:

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a roguelike set in a post-apocalyptic world. While some have described it as a "zombie game", there is far more to Cataclysm than that. Struggle to survive in a harsh, persistent, procedurally generated world. Scavenge the remnants of a dead civilization for food, equipment, or, if you are lucky, a vehicle with a full tank of gas to get you the hell out of Dodge. Fight to defeat or escape from a wide variety of powerful monstrosities, from zombies to giant insects to killer robots and things far stranger and deadlier, and against the others like yourself, that want what you have...

This game is a favorite of mine, and the community is updating the experimental builds constantly! If you install the soundpack it gets even better! Once I figure out how to do it, I plan on creating Anarchist content for it. :)

I've heard lots of good things about this game from a few different people, but I have never been able to get into it. The learning curve is steep for me for some reason. Is it worth it to keep on giving it a shot?

I'd say so. For me I died really quick a bunch of times, but I really liked the ability to adjust and customize a world and character that plays as difficult, or interesting, as you please and can always guarantee a thrilling moment if you set it up right.

The different stories I've gotten out of it have been quit thrilling and interesting. Once you get a hang of all the hotkeys, and get to know just how many ways you can survive (lots of realism like temperature, hunger, etc), you realize how much possibility lay in this world. I've always been a fan of turn based strategy, but this is the next level.

Here's some of the things that have happened to me in this game:

  • As a schizophrenic punk, I sparked up a joint while speeding 100+ mph racing my car at a zombie horde, only to find that as I pass the corner of a building, a turret shoots me through the window. I die instantly and the car continues it's path into the zombies, then into a mine field where I blew up, but like 30 zombie around there did too.

  • As a tentacled octopus mutant person with night vision, I emerged from the lab from whence I came and studied to learn trapping and survival skills after finding a library nearby. Tried to survive in the wild from foraging and collecting water. Eventually I raided some hotel that was in the woods, only to get into a gun fight with a horde. I was getting torn apart and made a desperate mad dash into one of the rooms. As soon as walk in the door I'm face to face with a massive zombie that punches me through the window, and I break half my tentacles and attempt to crawl away as it comes back to just smash me into the pavement.
